Filmfare has always honoured the spirit of excellence in cinema and over the years the award ceremony has transcended to a star-studded musical extravaganza. The celebs sashaying in their fashionable best and looking gorgeous on the red carpet, the stars performing to popular beats and the suspense surrounding the probable winners adds to the drama. The 58th Idea Filmfare Awards 2010 (South) on July 2, 2011 at Hyderabad International Convention Centre promises all this and more.
Through the years, the Idea Filmfare Awards have respected audience opinion and this time too people have voted in large numbers for their favourites in a nationwide poll. The polling process has generated a huge response for 10 popular categories each in Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam and Kannada films. Nominees drawn from the responses have been shortlisted and a specially appointed jury has been set up to pick the final winners.
Speaking on the occasion Jitesh Pillai, Editor - Filmfare said, “I’m privileged in the sense that I grew up watching greats like Sathyan sir, Shivaji Ganeshan, NTR and more recently Chiranjeevi, Mohanlal wield their magic onscreen -- and it gives me great pleasure in continuing to carry the torch of the great tradition that is the Filmfare Awards. Year after year watching the best of Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam and Kannada cinema is a mind-opening exercise. Besides celebrating excellence, the South Awards are a counterpoint to the North, give voice to the fact that for Filmfare, cinema isn’t just confined to the Hindi heartland but is a pan-Indian experience.”
Srinivas M., Circle Head – Chennai & Tamil Nadu, Idea Cellular said, “We are happy to present the 58th Idea Filmfare Awards – South in the 3rd consecutive year. Our continued association with Filmfare Awards will ensure that millions of Idea subscribers and fans of South Indian cinema will get an opportunity to access exclusive content on Idea’s 2G & 3G network.”
The Filmfare Awards (South) were born in 1953 and were held at the prestigious Kalaivanar Arangam in Chennai. Eventually it shifted to the distinctive Music Academy. Initially, only Tamil and Telugu films were considered for the awards and later, Malayalam & Kannada films became part of the event in 1966 &1969 respectively. The spirit of the awards lies in its popularity not just amongst the masses but also the film fraternity. It is the ultimate recognition of talent.
